International Human Rights Day March and Rally

October 21, 2010

PUSO seeks progressive organizations and individuals to participate in the planning process for this year’s International Human Rights Day march and vigil. Please seek the call for participation attached below.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you on December 11th!

Call for Participation

December 10th (D10) is internationally recognized as International Human Right Day. In the past years, the Philippine-United States Solidarity Organization (PUSO) has organized events to honor this important date here in the city of Seattle. For instance, in 2006, we organized a day of mourning with a funeral procession throughout Pike Place Market. In 2007, we included more organizations and grew the march route. In 2009, we organized a community speak-out about human rights in the Central District. In commemoration of the 62nd anniversary of the signing of the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we invite you to be a part of this year’s planning process. This year’s theme is to “Imagine Human Rights.”

We will gather to recognize recent human rights achievements – such as the recognition of water as a human right. We will also celebrate the creation of the 25 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, that seek to protect all people from torture, from arbitrary arrest or detention and to guarantee the right to food, clothing, housing, medical care and security. We will gather to recognize that all these rights and protections are not met for too many people both locally and around the world.

As PUSO, we imagine a world where Filipino/a workers and all people can find a fair and just livelihood in their own communities and do not have to cross borders in search of a living wage. We imagine a world where teachers, students, labor organizers, activists, peasant workers and religious leaders are not disappeared for their political beliefs. We imagine a world where all people have access to jobs, homes, food, and education.  Please join us and help us plan for this important event and contribute your own vision for human rights.
To ensure the greatest support of the community, this year we are planning the march for the afternoon of Saturday, December 11, 2010 in downtown Seattle.
Again, we need your help to make this event possible. From your organization we are hoping to secure one (or more) of the following commitments (please indicate in your reply email):

__ YES, we want to officially endorse the event (attach optional statement)
__ YES, we will send one committed and reliable volunteer to attend 2 to 3            planning meetings
__ YES, we pledge as an organization to bring __ 5, __10, __20, __30 (or              more) people to enthusiastically participate in the march and rally
__ YES, we have individuals with specific skills such as __ tech, __ banner-          making,  __speakers (for the rally),  __ musicians, __ other skills (specify)
__ YES, we can contribute funds (please indicate amount) to support the cost        of permits, supplies, use of space, etc.
Please reply as soon as you can with information about your capacity as an organization to help us make this the biggest International Human Rights Day event in Seattle yet.

In solidarity,

the Philippine U.S. Solidarity Organization (PUSO)
